Computer Writing Programs - A Myth?
As students learn how to write, they first associate sounds with the right combination of letters needed to reproduce that same word. Then they look to see if the words make any sense and if they are spelled correctly. They read what they have written to themselves in their head or aloud. However, for students with disabilities, alternative ways of creating written text are needed. With today's, technology, these alternatives can vary from computers to voice input and more. Students are able to see and hear as they write with the help of specific software programs.
Word processing programs are used to create and work with text or words, such as spelling. This program in general can make writing a whole lot easier and faster for students. Some of its common options are autotext and autocorrect. The first option called autotext allows students to insert frequently used text so that the next time the word is typed it will be done automatically after typing only a few identifying characters. As for the other option, autocorrect basically corrects certain misspelled words as they are typed (i.e. hte = the).
Writing aids used to help increase vocabulary, correct spelling, and ease the writing process can be found online. Through the Internet it is possible to access encyclopedias, dictionaries, a thesaurus, spell checker and grammar checker. Some software can help students in ways to organize their thinking so that can write more efficiently. Another software that exists is called a draft builder and what it does is that it gives students a framework for organizing their ideas and information so they can develop a first draft ready for editing and revising.
In addition, one of the most useful tools on the computer for writing are the talking word processing programs. Speech-to-text basically requires students to speak into a microphone and the program will type the words. The only downside to this program is that the students must be taught how to use this program and also the program itself must be adjusted to the students' word pronunciation and speech style. Most talking word processors also provide adjustable font size and adjustable foreground and background colors. Everyone benefits from these programs because they work by enhancing the acquisition of literacy skills. A speech recognition system basically provides students unable to use standard methods for computer access to write more efficiently. This form of technology is rapidly growing and changing. There are many different versions of it and as a result each have different features. You can find some of these programs if you go on the net and look for them. There are a few amongst the ones that you will see that are free and are actually good. Finally, when it comes to writing spelling is one of the most crucial elements. Which is why, there are software that focuses on developing or strengthening specific skills in writing. The learning is done through constant practice and by following an organized plan. Most programs will make the students go through grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. After completing the levels in those writing programs students should show signs of improvement in not only writing but reading as well.
